For decades, I have been drawn to layers and transparency – from glass to resin, painting to fabrics, and collage to mixed media. At times, this includes photography and imagery that dates back to historical times, as well as published books. In all of these works, I often inquire into opposites – the micro/macro, the internal/external, and the inside/outside. The overarching inquiry is into my psychological self, identity, place in the world, and personal history. I hope that you journey with me while contemplating these artworks, and that you are curious and open, and that you laugh and sometimes cringe. Making art is my home. Art-making and the work that is created is like the soul, which is so huge that I can’t encompass it. Rather, I try to touch it, allow it to encompass me, knowing that I can become a small part of the wonder it offers.
In my studio, I am surrounded by materials. They are often housed in clear stackable boxes where I can see the contents. These boxes are typically placed on shelves and can be easily scanned. Twisted wire, mesh, vegetable bags, found metal, rusted and ragged, caps, and various plastic and glass bottles/ vases. I have lived with these found objects and materials for many years, and then, all of a sudden, they catch my attention, just as they did on the day I picked them up off the street or my kitchen floor. All of a sudden, I say to myself, “I think I can use these.”
Typically, in the art-making process, the materials guide me. Each path of a series is often driven by the initial combination of materials that I explore. I consider images to include both materials, mark-making, and depictions of drawings/paintings, and the surfaces.
